Tex Live Utility Failed to Update: What You Need to Know

The recent announcement about the revocation of exposed certificates used by the Atom application has sent shockwaves throughout the developer community. As a preventative measure, these certificates will be revoked, effectively invalidating some versions of Atom. This means that users who are still using these older versions will no longer be able to access them after February 2.

When we first introduced Atom in 2011, our goal was to create a text editor that was both deeply customizable and easy to use. Over the years, we have maintained and updated the project to ensure its continued availability, but unfortunately, it has not received significant feature development in recent years.

As new cloud-based tools have emerged and evolved, the Atom community's involvement has declined significantly. As a result, we have decided to sunset Atom and focus on enhancing the developer experience in the cloud with GitHub Codespaces.

It is worth noting that Atom has played a crucial role in the creation of thousands of apps, including Microsoft Visual Studio Code, Slack, and our very own GitHub Desktop, thanks to its foundation as the Electron framework. However, reliability, security, and performance are core to GitHub's mission, and we believe that prioritizing technologies that enable the future of software development is essential.

We recognize that Atom is still used by many in the community and understand that migrating to an alternative solution can be a time-consuming and energy-intensive process. Therefore, we will continue to inform users about the sunset date through December 15, and we are committed to helping users and contributors plan for their migration.
